The 80-20 rule

Information Technology has its own series of 80-20 rules relating not just to monetary costs but the time required to support the applications. Looking at organizations running their own data center infrastructure, and extend Gartner’s findings, only 20% of the time and effort goes into running the actual application, where all business value is concentrated. The diagram below illustrates the extent that routine and non-core tasks, like patching operating systems and performing backups, impact upon the time of IT departments.
